Teeth Straightening - How can it help?
Our oral cavity is designed to have 32 teeth, 16 on the upper and 16 on the lower jawbone. The teeth perform the best when they erupt straight and are well aligned. When the growth of the jawbone and teeth are disproportionate, there can be less or more space for the proper eruption of your teeth. This can cause the teeth to erupt crookedly.
Occlusion is a term used to refer to the way the upper teeth and lower teeth come together when you bite. For the occlusion to be correct, the upper teeth should be slightly ahead of lower teeth in a bite. When the teeth are not straight and there is a disproportionate growth of jawbone/teeth, the bite deviates from normal conditions. Such a case is called malocclusion.
It is important to straighten your teeth and improve the bite for the following reasons.
- When the teeth are not straight it may be difficult to clean all the surfaces of your teeth which can increase the risk of dental infection
- When the teeth are not straight, chewing efficiency is reduced
- When the teeth are not straight, speech can be affected
- Your smile may not look the best when your teeth are crooked
Invisalign® for straightening teeth
Invisalign® is a system developed by Align Technology. A series of aligners, custom-made for each patient, are designed to apply moderate yet continuous pressure on the teeth to move them in a planned direction and to improve your bite. Invisalign® system can work well when the range of teeth movement required is moderate. Our dentists perform a thorough evaluation of your case when you visit our office to get Invisalign®. After the examination, our dentist will inform you if your case is treatable through the virtually invisible aligners.
Invisalign® - How it works?
During your first dental visit to our office, we will check the status of your teeth and gums and take images and impressions of your teeth. Problems like tooth decay and gum disease may have to be treated before going ahead with the orthodontic treatment. After studying your case, we will let you know if Invisalign® is a suitable treatment option. On confirmation that the aligners can help, a treatment plan is set at our office. Our dentist maps the movement of the teeth and communicates it with the lab. The impressions and the mapped teeth movement are used to create a 3D digital model of the plan. This model helps us review the outcome of the treatment plan and make necessary changes. On finalization of the treatment plan, the aligners are fabricated at the lab and delivered to our office.
A series of aligners are manufactured to fit the patient's needs. Each pair of aligners should be used for about 2 weeks. The aligners should be worn for 22 hours each day to get the best results. Our dentist may ask you to visit our office once in 6 weeks to check the progress of the treatment. It may take about 12 months for the treatment to be completed. On completion of the treatment, our team provides you with retainers to ensure that the teeth do not move back to their previous positions.
For the past decade, metal braces were the only option for misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, and gaps between the teeth.
